Hypoglycemia happens when your body needs blood sugar (glucose) for energy and typically, a hormone known as insulin converts the blood sugar to energy. But if your body doesn’t have much glucose or blood sugar, your body goes into a panic mode. The pancreas responds by creating more insulin which tries to convert the body’s glucose into energy and it rapidly uses up the glucose in the blood for energy conversion. A diet for hypoglycemia include a good mix of complex carbohydrates, protein and foods rich in fiber. Also, to avoid high consumptions of sodium (salt), fats and oils. Also, it’s important to exercise as excess body weight interferes with normal body functions. So, weight loss is important for a healthy lifestyle. Good for a Hypoglycemia Diet
* Complex carbohydrates are important and can be found in a variety of fruits and vegetables. In fact, it’s best if fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains are consumed. Examples of complex carbs are broccoli, spinach and legumes. Also, fiber-based vegetables are good because it has a positive effect on blood sugar levels and take longer to digest.
* Lean meats, poultry and seafood are good but like any food, moderation and self-control should be practiced.
* Whole grain foods especially breads, pasta and rice made of whole wheat is good.
* Fruits are very good for the diet but you want fruits that are fresh and not canned.
* Drinking up to 8 cups of water is good. Diet decaffeinated soda or unsweetened fruit juice is fine but again, practice moderation.
* Oils such as canola, peanut or olive oil are good for cooking.
Bad for a Hypoglycemia Diet
* Simple carbohydrates such as pastries or ice cream are digested faster in the body, the blood sugar (glucose) is absorbed into the blood stream rapidly. Also, it’s important to stay clear of foods that contain sugars such as corn syrup or high fructose syrups.
* For dairy products, it is advised to stay away from foods with saturated fats because it increases cholesterol levels.
* Alcohol and smoking are not good for those who are hypoglycemic.
* Stay away from starchy foods that are full of white flour such as white bread, white pasta and also white rice.
Similar to other diabetic diet plans, it is advised to have 4-6 small meals during the day instead of the three main meals. This helps keep blood sugar levels normal throughout the day but meals should never be skipped.
