Diets For Diabetes
Hypoglycemia is a medical condition that is uncommon for adults and children over the age of ten to incur. This is excluding cases of diabetes treatments and other medications. Hypoglycemia incurs when blood sugar in the body reaches a considerable low level that can threaten one’s life. Types of hypoglycemia that can exist are organic hypoglycemia (caused by a particular disease) and reactive hypoglycemia (caused by an overreaction of the body).
Any physician will inform you that there is no reason why a hypoglycemic condition should interrupt your daily routine. That is, if you are willing and able to develop healthy habits for your physical well being.
And so, with making adjustments to one’s life is important and that includes make good food choices, exercise but most of all, having a diet for diabetes.
Making the Right Food Choices
There is a misconception that diabetics must stop eating all their favorite foods but the truth is that, this is a misconception. You can eat what you want as long as you practice moderation but also if you make the right food choices. You definitely don’t want to eat a lot of foods that are high in sugar, high in fat or oil.
But you may want to eat a wide variety of foods that are healthy for you such as fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts, dairy products and grains/cereals.
Choosing foods that are high in fiber such as whole grain breads, fruits and cereal is ideal because they contain a lot of important vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Studies show that people suffering from type 2 diabetes should eat a high fiber diet to improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Also, studies show that people with type 1 diabetes should also eat a high fiber diet.
Moderation and How Many Times to Eat a Day
As mentioned earlier, practicing moderation when eating is very important. Diabetics are given a diabetic diet plan from their physicians and one should follow that. Just remember that if you eat foods with excess calories, then you know that extra calories leads to extra fat and also to extra weight.
If you are a person suffering from type 2 diabetes, know that weight loss in overweight and obese people have shown in studies that blood sugar level is improved and risk factors leading to heart disease is decreased. So, it’s very important to communicate with your physician or dietitian to have a diabetic diet plan in place.
As for how many times to eat per day, you want to eat meals and snakes at regular times of the day and do not miss any meals.
Can I Still Eat Sugary Foods if I’m Diabetic?
Again, you can eat anything you want but you need to practice moderation and self-control. If you can limit yourself to high sugar foods, great. But if you can’t, then practice self control and know what your eating. Definitely start off by knowing how the items you eat by reading the labels and definitely start eating within your calorie count. If you are on a 2,000 calorie diet. Then you start tabulating what you can eat or can’t eat. Then after you eat sugary foods, you may want to check your blood sugar to make sure you see how your levels are affected. Remember, you can also use non-caloric artificial sweeteners to reduce calories in foods. Again, communicate with your physician and dietitian and what is allowed in your diabetic diet plan.
Have a good diet plan to handle your diabetes is definitely important and making that adjustment to your lifestyle can not only be beneficial but ensure a longer life.
