You may have heard about type 1 or type 2 diabetes and even gestational diabetes but what is renal diabetes?

Renal diabetes is a condition in which blood sugar (glucose) is being passed in the urine even though the person may have a low or normal blood sugar level. For those that have normal kidneys, glucose is only excreted when there is an abnormal elevated level of glucose in the blood.

So, like any other diabetes, it is important that those diagnosed with renal diabetes follow a diabetic diet plan and make the necessary adjustments in life to maintain a proper body weight by controlling fats (cholesterol), sugar intake and normalizing and lowering blood pressure.

The most important part of a diabetic diet plan is that there are rules that need to be followed. One is that carbohydrates should be the primary focus in a diabetic diet. Carbohydrates are broken down to sugar when eaten and can be found in foods such as starches, fruits, milk products, puddings, candies, cakes and other sweets.

When eating your meals, it is very important that diabetics eat the same amount of carbs at every meal and having a routine of eating a balanced meal and not skipping any meals at all. Since the carbohydrates broken down to sugar is important for a diabetic.

Also, practicing moderation is very important. You can eat what you want but for diabetics, self-control is very important. Also, if you are overweight or obese, then it’s important to know that diabetics have a higher risk of heart diseases, so foods with low fat and low sodium is very important.

Lower Potassium Foods

Dialysis patients need to also be concerned about too much potassium (and phosphorus) in foods that they eat. So, low potassium foods are important. So, apples, blueberries, cherries, cranberries, pineapples, strawberries and tangerines are good.

Vegetables such as asparagus, green beans, beets, bell peppers, broccoli, cabbage and carrots are good to include for low potassium.

Food with high potassium that may need to be avoided are apricots, avocado, banana, kiwi, papaya, pears, peaches, prunes and watermelon. Also, a lot of fruit juices are high in potassium. For vegetables to avoid, artichokes, beans, brussel sprouts, lentils, squash, spinach, tomato and vegetable juice are high in potassium.

Definitely consult your physician if you are a dialysis patient and know more about foods that you can and can’t take.

Key Advice for Dieting for Renal Diabetics

For those who are renal diabetics, here are key advice to keep in mind for your diabetic diet:

* Do not eat foods that are high in sugar, practice self-control!
* Avoid high levels of sodium (salt) and use alternative herbs or non-salt related spices and DO NOT use salt substitutes because they contain potassium chloride.

* If possible, try to limit your dairy products like milk, yogurt or ice cream to one 1/2 cups a day.
